Autumn Australian Natives Still Life Original Painting

This original botanical artwork was inspired by the banksia and autumn colours.

“I love visiting the local flower market for fresh flowers, but I happened to find this native bouquet from my local Harris Farm while out doing the grocery run. Inspiration strikes at the oddest moments and I was immediately drawn to the beautiful orange-brown tones in the banksias. I quickly set up a still life to paint and forgot all about dinner prep – woops!”

Zen Gum Leaves Original Painting.

This original botanical artwork was inspired by the feeling of calm when in nature and winter in Australia.

“I was feeling anxious and trapped during the covid lockdown last winter. It was a particularly miserable winter – there’d been a constant downpour for a few weeks, grey skies and window-rattling winds. I’d had enough of staying inside, saw a break in the rain and just went for it. I managed to make it around the block before it poured again, and passed through the park at the end of my street on my way back. Giant gum branches littered the park with their sculptural limbs. I grabbed a few large branches and excitedly made a mad dash home in the rain. And for the first time in weeks I felt creatively free again – just really excited to play and paint.

From these foraged gum branches emerged two gum leaf still life paintings. This particular still life painting embodied the idea of feeling zen and balanced after being out in nature.”

Lush Gum Leaves Original Painting.

This original botanical artwork was inspired by dark and rich colours of autumn and Australian native flora.

“I’ve always found the saying ‘blue and green should never be seen’ rather odd as these are the colours we see the most of when we step out into nature; and in my mind are very harmonious together. I wanted to explore a sense of immersion in nature using harmonious greens and blues in this painting. I loved exploring the different textures as well – the lush, overflowing abundance of hydrangeas punctuated by the harsh shapes of Australian native flowers.”

This original botanical artwork was inspired by the Australian native waratah and the anticipation of summer.

“I painted this piece from a still life setup with flowers purchased from my local flower market in Sydney. I was quite excited to find waratahs available at the flower market. It was fascinating to watch the flower open up and change shape over the days I was painting it in my studio.

“I loved playing around in my sketchbook to find the perfect composition before committing to a final design on canvas. I really wanted to show off the detailed waratah buds set against the contrasting blue, green and purple colours in the gum leaves. The arrival of new flower species at the market really got me thinking about summer which was just around the corner. I decided to capture this summer vibe with the blue background which reminds me of Sydney’s summer skies.”
